Peep and Egg: I’m Not Hatching by Laura Gehl, illustrated by Joyce Wan
Everyone needs a big sister like Peep. She wants Egg to come out of the shell so they can play together, but Egg is too scared. Peep is persistent. When Egg hatches they can watch the sunrise, splash in puddles, stroll to the pond, and more. But each time Egg has an excuse: “too high,” “too wet,” “too far.”
As Peep describes the fun she and Egg will have out in the wide world we see the two engaged in these activities, Peep having fun and Egg looking distressed. Finally, Peep gives up on her cajoling and we find out what Egg is most afraid of: being left out!
Joyce Wan’s illustrations are simple, sweet, and expressive, and the book is well-paced for reading aloud. Peep and Egg would be a great gift for a child anticipating being a big sister or brother.
