Mental Health During COVID-19
Mental Health During COVID-19
If you’re feeling run down, exhausted, and overwhelmed during this time- you’re not alone! Helping your nanny family adjust to the new normal while taking care of yourself and your own family is a lot. Keep in mind that it’s okay focus on your health. Everyone’s self care techniques and coping mechanisms are different- and that’s okay too! Here are a few tips if you’re looking for ways to help yourself and your nanny family.
Schedule daily movement/ meditation:
Many streaming services offer free Pilates and Yoga and other aerobic exercises. These videos are anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, and offer a wide variety of ways to stretch, unwind or get some cardio in. We love Cosmic Kids Yoga and Yoga with Adrienne! These videos can benefit both kids and adults.
It’s Spring! Tend to the Garden:
Is there a garden that needs some love? A patch of healthy soil? Or a sunny spot perfect for a container garden? Can you propagate an already thriving houseplant? Caring for plants is soothing and rewarding. Plus a great way for adults to clear their minds, move their bodies, and take a breather from the strain of working from home. Ask your nanny family what their garden goals are and set a plan for everyone to participate as their schedules allow.
Remember the wise old adage that you can’t pour from an empty cup- so make sure to stay hydrated! This may seem silly but sipping on water throughout the day will help you to stay energized and happy. We have two pet “juggies” at our house. They keep us motivated to drink up!
Create a Daily Routine:
Having problems keeping track of days? Finding it challenging to keep the kids engaged? Create a routine for yourself and the kiddos, complete with little boxes to check off. No task is too small: brushing your teeth, taking out the garbage, reading time, exercise, downtime. Kids feel empowered when they can predict the next step.
Let the Sunshine In:
Make sure to go outdoors. Taking a quick walk can help break up the monotony of quarantine, as well as lift morale. Collect rocks, sticks, leaves and shells. There’s never a wrong time to build a fairy house! Finding new walking paths, listening to music or walking with a pet or someone in your home can help with both physical and mental health. If your boss has been hunched over their laptop for hours – pass a post-it reminder to take a moment in the sun!
Music inspires mood and can flip a grumpy pancake! Maybe you need a downtime theme song to help transition to a slower pace? Or you might need a dance-party theme song to shake the sillies out? Never underestimate the power of music to inspire the right energy.
Build your Brain Power:
Try something new! Always wanted to try sudoku or learn to crochet? With YouTube “How To’s” on virtually anything, now is the time to pick up a hobby you’ve always been interested in. Do your nanny kids or employers show interest in a particular area? Do a quick search and find some resources to share.
Rest & Repeat:
Don’t forget to rest! With the ever changing news and social distancing that’s in effect, it’s important to make time to repair. Don’t be afraid to enjoy little moments throughout the day. Keeping a positive outlook will help not only yourself, but others around you. You can do this!
