Must Read: I Am an Artist!
When I was 4 years old, I decided to draw giant rainbows in crayon on my bedroom walls. My mom wasn’t thrilled by my artistic expression, but I thought it was a post-modern masterpiece. I can definitely relate to the main character in the story I Am an Artist by Marta Altes.
Review from Babyology:
Ever had some art on your wall that you didn’t commission? Then this is the book for you (or rather, your little artist). Meet the little boy who can’t stop creating art. “I am an artist and I can’t stop creating. EVERYTHING inspires me…” And indeed it does. This little boys sees the artistic possibility in everything from his socks to the contents of the fridge and his cat. His world is alive with colors, shapes and textures. There’s just one problem. The little boy’s mum doesn’t always see the genius in his work.
“Where I see The Loneliness of the Carrot, my mum sees The Unfinished Dinner.”
So the little boy creates a piece of art that he is sure will make his mum smile. I won’t give away the superb ending but know that it is spectacular and on a grand scale (let’s hope real-life little artists don’t get similar ideas!).
I Am an Artist by Marta Altes is genius – the story is very clever, slyly funny and the illustrations are bursting with color, humor and talking points. In particular, art lovers will appreciate the subtle nods to famous artists and styles peppered throughout the illustrations.
About the Author: Marta Altes loves to tell stories and her love of illustration saw her study for a degree in Graphic Design in Barcelona. Marta moved to the UK to study for an MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art and graduated in 2011.
